Why furniture matters
Furniture in Big Ambitions is never purely cosmetic. Some pieces are functional and directly affect how much you can stock and sell, while decorative pieces raise the perceived quality of a store and lift customer satisfaction. Because satisfaction feeds both footfall and spend, the difference between a bare room and a well-fitted one shows up on the daily ledger. The 1.0 happiness overhaul made environment matter more, with rain, homelessness, and subway time lowering mood, while parks, umbrellas, TVs, and gym mats help recover it.
Functional versus decorative
Functional furniture includes shelves, racks, counters, cleaning stations, and production equipment that determine capacity and workflow. Decorative furniture includes sofas, plants, portraits, and rugs that improve ambiance. Many items blur the line: a clothing rack is functional storage that also reads as a finished retail space. The official store description notes you should "fill each with furniture that suits your style and standing," signaling that decor is part of your business's perceived tier.
Storage and pallet shelves
Shelves are the backbone of stock capacity.
| Item | Price | Capacity | Where | Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Storage Shelf | $1,200 | 16 boxes | Square Appliances, AJ Pederson & Son | Retail stores |
| Pallet Shelf | $3,000 | 60 boxes | AJ Pederson & Son | Warehouses |
| Cleaning Station | $100 | — | Square Appliances | Cleaning |
| Trash Bin | $30 | — | AJ Pederson & Son | Waste |
| Changing Room | $1,000 | — | AJ Pederson & Son | Clothing stores |
| Restaurant Booth | $2,000 | — | AJ Pederson & Son | Food service |
| Cabinet with Drawers | $470 | — | AJ Pederson & Son, Square Appliances | General |
Employees automatically pull stock from shelves onto the sales floor, so enough shelving prevents the yellow-dot supply shortage that caps a store's hourly throughput.
Where to buy furniture
Six stores sell furniture, and no single store carries everything, so you will visit several:
- AJ Pederson & Son — general retail equipment: registers, counters, racks, cleaning stations, jewelry cases, bookshelves.
- Square Appliances — appliances and food equipment: fridges, freezers, coffee machines, pizza ovens, deep fryers, salad bars.
- Essentials Appliances — nightclub and gym gear: DJ booths, dance floors, workout machines, speakers, security cameras.
- Luxconcept — home furniture: sofas, coffee tables, gaming chairs, plants, portraits.
- IKA BOHAG — the largest furniture store: tables, bar stools, computers, monitors, speakers, gym equipment, shelves, rugs.
- Mr. Scott's Office Supplies — office gear: copiers, phones, executive desks, mesh chairs, monitors.
Factory machines are separate and come from the Factory Supply Depot, covered in Where to Buy.
Music and satisfaction
A silent store draws customer complaints, which hurts satisfaction and sales. Buying loudspeakers from a furniture store and placing them inside a shop auto-plays the in-game radio and provides an easy satisfaction boost. Combined with uniformed, well-trained staff and a clean, decorated interior, music is one of the cheapest levers for lifting a store's rating.
Interior design and ratings
Through the Interior Design tool you can recolor furniture with a right-click and repaint walls and floors, letting you build a coherent look. Store Quality, driven partly by interior presentation, influences customer evaluation, so investing in decor is not vanity. A clothing or gift shop that looks premium can justify higher prices, especially in districts like Midtown that tolerate premium pricing.
Practical furnishing order
When opening a shop, prioritize functional capacity first: enough shelves and racks to meet the building's customer capacity, then a checkout or counter, then cleaning and waste stations. Once operations are stable, add decorative pieces and loudspeakers to push satisfaction toward 100%. For warehouses, pallet shelves at 60-box capacity are the priority, and the logistics chain that feeds them is detailed in Imports & Deliveries.
Common furnishing mistakes
- Buying decor before functional shelves, so the store cannot meet its customer capacity.
- Forgetting a cleaning station, which lets hygiene drift and satisfaction fall.
- Skipping loudspeakers, leaving a silent store that draws customer complaints.
- Under-supplying pallet shelves in a warehouse, which starves the delivery route and causes stockouts.
