What a liquor store is
A liquor store is a genuine retail business in Big Ambitions, named on the official roster that lists gift shops, supermarkets, law firms, liquor stores, and more. It sits in the general retail family next to bookstores and clothing stores, but its product shelf — alcohol and tobacco — is a niche most other stores never touch.
Community saves repeatedly flag the same two attractions: low competition (business-selection screens in 1.0 playthroughs show liquor stores with little or no competition while fast food is crowded) and small-footprint viability — players open them in tiny, cheap units other businesses would reject. One 1.0 playthrough planned "probably the liquor store first" when picking which businesses a new warehouse would serve.
What a liquor store sells
The official product list is narrow and premium-priced:
| Product | Role |
|---|---|
| Beer | Primary — volume seller |
| Bottle of Wine | Primary — premium |
| Whisky | Primary — premium |
| Cigar | Primary — high-value tobacco |
| Pack of Cigarettes | Primary — repeat purchase |
| Margarita / Martini | Cocktail extras |
| Soda Can / Energy Drink | Volume add-ons |
Shelves and fridges
Alcohol and tobacco each need their dedicated display, and the tobacco shelves come in three sizes because product boxes differ:
| Product | Fixture |
|---|---|
| Beer | Drinks Shelf |
| Bottle of Wine | Wine Shelf |
| Cigars | Tobacco Shelf (Small / Medium / Large) |
| Pack of Cigarettes | Tobacco Shelf (Small / Medium / Large) |
| Soda Can / Energy Drink | Drinks Fridge |
| Margarita / Martini | Drinks Shelf |
A small liquor store can be profitable with just a drinks shelf, a wine shelf, one tobacco shelf, and a register — which is exactly why the cheap little units work. Watch customer capacity the usual way: registers add 20 capacity each, and a 75 m² unit tops out around 10 customers per hour, so one well-staffed register usually covers a small store.
Security is not optional here
Cigarettes and cigars are small, high-value, and resellable — the classic shoplift target. The official entry includes Security Camera and Security Panel options, and community guidance for high-value retail is to post a Security Guard. Camera-plus-panel coverage is cheap insurance compared to steady shrinkage.
Supply chain and the nightclub link
Liquor stores slot naturally into warehouse logistics: in community saves a Logistics Manager gains liquor store destinations like any other retail endpoint, and nightclubs order their beer and whisky through the same warehouse network. If you run both, one warehouse can serve the nightclub's bar stock and the liquor store's shelves side by side — set the destinations once and the morning delivery loop covers both. The automation guide covers the Purchasing Agent and Logistics Manager loop, and imports & deliveries explains supplier tiers and delivery mechanics.
Liquor store opening checklist
- Survey competition — liquor stores are thin on the ground in most districts.
- Rent a small-to-mid retail unit; the format works in modest footprints.
- Fit a drinks shelf, wine shelf, tobacco shelf, register, and drinks fridge.
- Post security coverage (cameras at minimum) for tobacco stock.
- Hire customer service and cleaning staff; train them past the HR basics.
- Route resupply through a warehouse standing order once you have one.
